G.L. Giles’ Review of Schlimm’s The Tipsy Vegan for Target Audience Magazine

Schlimm, John.  The Tipsy Vegan:  75 Boozy Recipes to Turn Every Bite into Happy Hour.  Boston:  Da Capo Press, 2011.

More than just a recipe book, this

fun-filled-party-in-a-book shows that

compassionate eating choices

don’t have to be dreary!

John Schlimm is a member of one of the oldest brewing families and he certainly brings that to the plate—literally!  From the vegan take on the well-known Middle Eastern Baba Ganoush which he titles “Hubba-Hubba Baba Ganoush” (which lists ingredients like “vegan mayonnaise, such as Vegenaise” as an option to give you an idea of how it would slightly differ from the original preparation) to “Rockin’ Roasted Potatoes with Racy Rosemary + Mustard” (which calls for both vodka and dry vermouth or dry white wine) it’s all pleasing to the palate.  Plus, he directs readers to find information on which kinds of alcohol are vegan friendly at www.Barnivore.com if not sure.  In addition, Schlimm’s sense of humor shines through in many of the descriptions of the somewhat surreptitiously good-for-your-health, too, recipes—including the desserts like “Vanilla, I Scream!” where instead of traditional ice-cream there’s cream of coconut milk, soy milk, silken tofu, etc.  Schlimm definitely deserves my plaudits for this wonderful-for-the-holidays as well recipe book which is sure to not only empower you in having the options of vegan eating, but also for the unputdownable fun he adds via the titles of the recipes, descriptions of each recipe and in his hilarious “Introduction.”
