Vanna: And They Came Baring Bones Reviewed; Set to Play Warped Tour 2012
Review by Wesley Berrien
When one thinks of hardcore bands, thoughts of screaming vocals, simple guitar riffs, and basic breakdowns come to mind. Vanna’s latest album, And They Came Baring Bones, does not diverge from this musical stereotype, but instead brings its own innovative sound to the genre. Vanna can be compared to The Chariot or Norma Jean yet the band members still encompass their own personal sound into the album.
The album begins with a few humdrum tracks, however, later songs have amazing head-banging breakdowns and unrestrained verses. “Silver Sun” offers a sound that will have listeners of the genre singing and screaming along with that in-your-face sound that metalheads know and love. By the last track the sound escalates to a vicious sound that too few bands can recreate.
Most hardcore bands either have distinctive vocals or they are the same as all others. Vanna manages to coalesce both of its vocalists into a sound comparable to Underoath or Agraceful. While the screaming vocals are unique in the sense that they have a chaotic and raw sound, the singing is much more collected and fervent. This allows the band to come together to form a dark and abstract sentiment.
The album has its ups and downs, but, overall, offers an astonishingly satisfying experience. Fans of Underoath, Bring Me the Horizon, Fall of Troy, and Haste the Day will be amazed by this exceptional album.
