Jimmy Herring tore down the walls of The Variety Playhouse Saturday night in the Little 5 section of Atlanta. Not surprisingly, I saw someone wearing an Atlanta Institute of Music shirt. Chances are, the crowd was mostly comprised of musicians or they were at least accompanying one.
The only “pit” took place in the ears of the audience members, with flurries notes and heart tugging melodies reminiscent of Steve Morse. At many of shows, the singer gets responses from the audience with witty quips during or between songs. Herring earned his cheers with brilliant lines bending around breakneck maneuvers. Usually during an instrumental act, one would hear the crowd talking, but, for the most part, people were too busy swaying back and forth too mesmerized by the show to even start a conversation.
