With a mellow moody flair, Nashville-based Rayland Baxter opened for Grace Potter and the Nocturnals at the Tabernacle on Saturday October 6. With his folksy-blues sound that reverberated in the venue, Baxter played songs off his debut album, Feathers & Fishhooks, which was released on ATO on August 28. Baxter started the night with “The Mtn Song” and then intro-ed “Olivia” by saying, “Don’t get attached to love – it will bite you in the butt.” Baxter’s set was full of vivid lyrics, wonderful melodies and was a nice way to kick back and relax to quality music.

Grace Potter announced to the audience that they would be back on December 13 for Star 94’s Jingle Jam. “We’ll be back. We just can’t get enough of Hotlanta. It gets cold up in Vermont, that’s where we’re from. So we like to warm up in the winter and come back to Atlanta.”
There was really nothing like seeing Grace Potter and the Nocturnals perform with dynamic energy as they sang songs off their fourth studio album, The Lion the Beast the Beat, which was released June 12. As the incredibly talented Grace Potter and the Nocturnals hit the stage, the crowd erupted into happy cheers as the vivacious Grace Potter took to the keyboard first for “The Lion the Beast the Beat” before she made her way to the center of the stage in a commanding performance with high energy.
It was hard to take my eyes off Potter as she and the Nocturnals performed “Turntable,” “Goodbye Kiss,” “Ah, Mary,” “Timekeeper,” “Apologies,” “Joey,” “Runaway” and “One Short Night” before going into a Gillian Welch cover of “Elvis Presley Blues.” She followed this with performances of “Fooling Myself,” “Tiny Light,” “Stars,” “Sugar” and then a gorgeous rendition of Beyonce’s “Why Don’t You Love Me.” They rounded out the set with “Nothing But the Water I,” “Nothing But the Water II” and ended on “Medicine” before they came back for the encore, in which they played “Paris (Ooh La La)” and “Stop the Bus.”
